The first principle of the Way of the Shepherd is to always know the condition of your flock! A manager cannot manage what he does not know. So one has to make a point of knowing not just the status of the work but also the status of the people.
People are tired of being treated like a number. Everyone wants to be treated as an individual. Take a personal interest in each of the people. Discover their skills and interests, goals and dreams. Engage the people on a regular basis. Get to know your flock, one sheep at a time.
People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
